You can get by on older engines with what ever as long as it don't leak its not as easy on modern engines with OHC and hydraulic cam phrases. With labor rates going well past a buck and a haft a min. these days is it worth it to extend the oil life and depend on a cheap filter to do the job.
Let me put it another way can the effect be reversed once the cause is found. Yes it can if you can roll lucky sevens every time.
