Place I used to work, there was an elderly salesman, long retired, who owned a Model T he had restored. He would come by to visit, sometimes driving the old car. I was looking at it one day, he pulls out a crumbling book, nor sure where he got it, but it was from around 1900.
It was a book of written out instructions and artist renditions of various land marks. It gave directions starting at the intersection of Main and First street, of downtown Ft Worth. Mostly it showed how to get to each surrounding town, some were to various attractions, train depots, cotton gins, stock yards, etc.
It gave turn by turn directions, something like: Start at Main and First, go south on Main 3 miles, turn left at the 3 big trees (insert picture), go about a mile turn right at the mail box (insert picture), cross the iron bridge... There were very few street names or numbers once you were out of town, occasionally a reference to a property owners name, a creek or river name, or a rail line.
The book looked like it was typed on a typewriter, but it was a production type, hard back bound book, not a one off. Somewhat professional but had some misspellings.
