I think what you are worried about is Giant HOGweed.
That's the nasty stuff that you don't want to touch, and is tough to kill. Here in NY, you call the DEC, and they'll get rid of it for you. The guys come in hazmat suits with respirators and spray it down with some nasty weed killer.

Today's Featured Article - Oliver 550 Purchaser Checklist - by Greg Sheppard. Pound for pound the 550 is better than anything I've seen.
