JD,check your plug wire resistance.Back in the HEI ignition days,if a wire had high resistance,the rotor button would burn thru,and eventually the spark would ground out on the distributor shaft,and kill the engine.The rotor could not handle the extra load,amperage,needed to to fire the plug thru the bad wire.I can not remember right now what the resistance should be,4000 ohms? I know you don't have HEI,but I can see the possibility. On the other hand -how hard is it to push the cap down,and latch it,without that missing cover? I really think it would just make a better connection,unless it is grinding away the center terminal of the cap.Mark
