you will need to tell us if you have the oem 1 1/8" 6 spline shaft, or a new 1 3/8" 6 spline shaft.
the oem shaft only sticks out about 3" period.
the newer shafts stick out about 4"
the old tear drop caps only work on the oem shafts, the ne caps the size of a soda can fit either.
It is possible you have the new style shaft and it has very excessive thrust play letting it appear to set out even longer, but be pushed back in to it's normal location.
usually a bad bearing, or broke or popped out split ring, or even a damaged bearing carrier where the split rings sit.
