Having worked on European cars in the past Lucas electrical components seem to work when they want to which is why mechanics call Lucas "the prince of darkness'. The parts book shows 2 different solenoids for the starter, a 4 contact solenoid part number 1894550M91, and a 2 contact solenoid part number 3474587M1. There is also this notion on the starter solenoids "Check Part Carefully Before Ordering". If the new solenoid in any way didn't look like your old one its not the right one.
