What are you going to seed after the rye. Rye has an aleopathic (sp?) effect that will make it difficult for some to grow following rye. It is a bit like natural herbicide. If you are seeding to some small seeded things to re-establish CRP (clovers, alfalfa, some grasses) then rye can be trouble. If you don't want it to overwinter, oats would work. If you want it green in the spring, I'd go with wheat or winter triticale instead of rye. Somewhere between 1 bushel and 2 bushel per acre is acceptable for any of them for cover.
