Can't figure my 95 LeSabre out. It's alternator surges for some reason. At idle it starts off at battery voltage (12-ish), then surges up to 15.5 volts or so and pulls the engine down 2-3 hundred rpm then drops and goes back to battery voltage and does it again. Each cycle lasts 30 seconds or so. It's a 140 amp Delco with only one wire going to the regulator (factory setup). My really cheap K/D inductive ammeter shows a 75 amp draw when it pulls the engine down. If I unplug the regulator the voltage stays solid at battery voltage and it idles fine. It's been getting progressively worse. I had to put brushes in the alternator, ran for awhile doing the same thing then a few months later it smoked the guts and it quit. I put an O'Reilly rebuild on it yesterday, same thing. I slammed the hood and resolved to take it somewhere Monday but then I thought of Y/T and how many are knowledgeable of auto electrical and thought I'd post.
