And that prepares them for life as an adult! You have to learn to be competitive to get ahead which IMO is a good thing. Who do you want for your doctor? The guy who barely got by or the one who is the best and brightest? You as the parent lead by example! When my kids were growing up if I messed something up I did not act embarrassed about it. I owned it. "Boy did I do something stupid! And this is what I did to overcome it/fix it"!
Do you know that most senior officers in the military were not only eagle scouts but also college athletes? Most CEOs of major companies were athletes too, either high school or college! They got where they are to day because they learned to be competitive! You want your kid to grow up, join the service and then be lead by someone who's going to melt under pressure because they never learned to deal with anything? Heck with that idea we should have just quit and become Japanese on Dec 8 1941! No, a generation wiped the blood off their collective faces and took the fight to them! You want to own stock run by the guy who was dead last in his class and doesn't have a competitive bone in their body (and yes, it's happened, mostly when daddy has controlling interest in the company). Those companies often fail shortly after daddy is no longer in the picture! Guess what? Next week there is another game! Next week there is another match!
Now if your kid is in all this stuff is it because it's what they really want to do or is it because he/she is trying to get your approval? That is something that should be looked at too. Kid may just not be an athlete! Maybe that kid is the one who's going to win a debate or a science fair project!
You set the stage for how they handle failure by how they see how you handle it. Do they see you pick yourself up and keep fighting? Or do you mope about with a beer in your hand drowning your sorrows?
