It's called freedom of speech. There is no freedom to not be offended! Kid just has to learn to get over it. It starts with the realization that they cannot expect respect. Respect is earned, not granted. How someone deals with situations like those mentioned may earn or lose them respect. Again it's something they have to learn to deal with. I'll never forget a guy, pretty poor excuse for a SGT, yelling at a PVT "you have to respect me"! I can still see his face when the PVT said "no SGT I have to respect the rank, not the man wearing it".
