First, insurance laws vary state to state. So some of the advice given is good ONLY for the state the poster has filed a claim in.
But do get online and look in your local area for basically the same car ON DEALERS LOTS with close to the same mileage. No private party sales. By local area say 50 miles from your door. That will be your target price. Insurance is supposed to put you back to where you were before the accident, minus any deducible. That will be your target price. Now this is a tricky part. In some states they can indeed devalue a vehicle due to condition. But in others you had a running, driving car of whatever make and model and value is based on what it's going to cost, local area, to replace it with a like vehicle. Look up the laws online! If you don't understand them consult a lawyer. Couple hundred dollars on a lawyer or with a licensed independent adjuster can save that much or even more! If you live in a state with a good insurance commission at the state level you may be able to gain your info with a phone call. They too should be able to tell you what your rights are under the law. Again, that will vary state to state.
