Walmart came to town so,e years ago, Kmart couldn't leave fast enough but Kmart was already a troubled company.
Target left 2 years ago, but they too are a troubled company and refocused themselves on a higher end market than our down home farm and shift work town.
Two dollar store, a Menards, and just a few months ago an Aldes grocery moved in to town. I'm very puzzled by the location of the Aldes but I wish them well....
Meanwhile, the Walmart is one of the few that isn't open 24 hours a day. Their grocery store isn't all that popular, obviously the merchandise side is about the only thing left in town.
Menards they were rumor ing it was too slow and going to close. Well they closed one small order hut, but are now expanding and rebuilding the store even bigger.
We haD 2 grocery stores one on each end of town for decades, both are open 24-7 since I was in high school. Both appear to be doing well against Walmart.
We have 2 local small town lumber yards, both of them are still open after several years of the Menards in town.
Wife, and many others, do miss the tArget store. Their clothes and gal sections were better laid out than Walmart has from what I am told.
Menards is putting in a bigger grocery section, so I probably won't see much other than the Menards and Runnings (fleet and farm store) in town......
When I was a kid, can't barely remember, there were 7 grocery stores in town I guess, a couple were still the counter with much of the stuff on the big tall shelf behind the clerk (likely the owner actually) and they supplied the town with those small hoise sized corner stores. One still exists as a novelty shop.
