Sometimes you're in a place that it's to loud, or impolite to talk on the phone. Or you're not next to your phone constantly. I'll get a text saying dinner in 15 minutes from my phone on the workbench while I'm under the tractor, that I'll read when I get up, and send back i'll be in in 5 to my wife while she's cooking and has her hands full and can't answer the phone anyway. That way she knows the message was received.
I can read a text in the checkout line, where it may not be polite to talk on the phone while the person is ringing you up. I can send my kids a text while they're in school and they'll get it when they can, since you aren't allowed to use phones in class.
I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it definitely has cases where it makes life easier.
