Speaking of the VA's handling of Agent Orange claims by Viet Nam vets, I will offer this info, for whatever it's worth:
I know a woman whose husband was an enlisted man in the Air Force. He was a crew member in one of those planes equipped with special radar or sonar, think they may have called AWACs. He served in VN for only about three months. I have no idea how he might have been exposed to Agent Orange, or to what degree. However, about ten years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinson's, and the symptoms began to manifest rather quickly. He died in 2010, but from a blood clot during knee replacement surgery.
Prior to his death his wife, a diligent, enterprising sort, talked to a veteran's service officer who suggested that her husband might be entitled to Agent Orange disability pay. He recommended some other individual or agency which would serve as their advocate in seeking this disability designation. Long story short, he was declared to have an Agent Orange disability, and he began receiving a disability payment (about $1,200 a month, I think), which is still being paid to his wife.
I have no particular point to make with this story other than to point out that some veterans apparently have received compensation for AO-related problems. That they have done so may be due to the diligence of their advocate rather than the relative merits of their claim. The secret may be to get the right person working your claim. I don't know how you would find that person, however.
