I was given a working chute made from heavy pipe with a homeade head gate on the end, with the gate opening to the front. It did not have a floor. My theory is that if a cow is in the gate it could push against the ground and move something around. Previous owner chained it to posts. I welded supports in and floored it with oak lumber so the cow would be working against itself if it pushed against anything. I nailed 1 x 3 strips of oak cross ways so the cow wont slide down in the chute. I bought a Prifert head gate which can be opened all the way so that when the cow is released it follows a removeable chute made from corral panels to go back to the pen. Has worked well so far.
