Actually Omaha Beach was the worst of the day. Had the US been forced to pull off the beach the other beaches (Utah, Sword Gold Juno) would have sufficed. They would have simply driven inland and encircled the defenses the Germans had on Omaha - there was no depth. Biggest mistake of the day was when the British didn't drive for Caen when they landed with little opposition Instead Monty waited until everything he wanted was landed, unloaded, organized and well rested. Instead of taking Caen on day one as planned Montgomery finally drove inland on June 12th (D-Day +6), only to meet strong German opposition that only grew stronger - apparently they had made good use of the time the British had given them. It took nearly a month to take the town that could have been taken on day one with a rifle squad.
