An older cousin of my wife's, now deceased, was awarded the Bronze Star as an Army Lieutenant in Germany in WWII. All he ever said about it was he got his platoon lost in the Black Forrest and they gave him the Bronze Star for it.
He never married, and his brother, who was also a combat veteran of WWII, is also a life-long bachelor and is now in a nursing home with dementia, so we don't even know where the citation is for Robert's Bronze Star. By both being bachelors, that end of the family died out and my wife is the nearest surviving relative.
We can only speculate on what happened. Maybe by getting lost, or out of position, he was able to initiate a flank attack on the enemy? Who knows? We don't.
