You should not need a slip clutch. My six foot Mott doesn't have one, and it has never broken a shear pin.
As for moving the gearbox, your best bet would be to replace the shaft and tube. Although it would be prohibitively expensive to do this with original equipment parts, you should be able to get reasonably-priced replacements from Montage Enterprises.
