There's two ways to look at this. One is, back BEFORE there was an electronic device in at least one hand of a driver (and often both hands!), having lights on made a huge improvement in safety. However, lights on or lights off....it won't make any difference to someone who has their eyes glued to their cell phone!!

I first learned about driving with headlights back in the early-90's while making my first trip to Finland. It was law there to have headlights on.....I think in the urban areas, but you could turn them off on rural roads. Maybe I have that backwards. Can't remember as I've slept a few times since then. However, I immediately noticed the difference and started the practice here, using headlights on low "most" of the time.

Now with this newest truck of ours (a 2004), the daytime running lights come on automatically, and there's no guarantee that they'll be on at all. I agree that having the lights come on automatically makes people less alert to the use of lights, but not just in using them, but also in NOTICING them on other vehicles!! It's fast becoming just part of the norm, and is overlooked by folks who make no conscientious effort to ensure they have lights on in the daytime. It's the actual act of remembering to turn lights on (in my opinion) that results in the use of daytime lights actually making a positive difference.

In the end, lawmakers and automakers have made these auto-on lights on all newer vehicles, which as I agreed to is dumbing us down. But there's a lot to be said for trying to prevent every death or injury out there. I mean, if we as a species ever get to a point where virtually nobody dies due to their own stupidity, ....just how many stupid idiots will be overrunning our world?!?!? ...And then they breed and multiply, teach their offspring the same horrible habits and perpetuate the problem!

....Think I'll go back to bed! *lol*

Today's Featured Article - Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga ...
