Our utility pole in the yard was hit last summer , blew the transformer , and sent a power surge down the wire to the barn . The power surge knocked three cows right off their feet , and blew out the milker pulsation equipment. With in the next week we had ten cows come down with mastitis, and two cows dried themselves off. Over the course of the next month several cows aborted . Then things got worse , as the older cows 8-10 year olds started having their calves , they would go down , like they had milk fever. They did not respond to treatment for milk fever , and after being looked at by the Vet, he determined that their hearts where damaged by the power surge from the lightnig strike. Some cows would die a day or so after calving , one cow lasted two weeks , she just got weaker and weaker. One days she got up tobe milked , and fell down dead in the stall. We lost 9 cows in all over some eight months after the strike . I don't want another.
