Now that you mention the oxygen concentrator, I think there was a "method to her madness"- She wanted you to have clean air and not a bunch of dirt screwing it (and you) up.
When I worked for Production Credit Assn. in the '70's, a dairy farm customer wanted to finance a new tractor. He was agonizing over whether to spend the extra for a cab. He was inclined not to.
