OK, outside looking in so to speak.
1972 we moved onto a farm in west MN from the burs to Newark and NYC in NJ. I was 16 and impressionable. Heck of a lot of the farm kids I knew couldn't wait to get away from the farm. The ones that planned on staying for the most part looked a college as a 4 year vacation from the farm. Heck of a lot of those kids tried doing exactly what they were taught and failed. Now had there not been the Russian food embargo, had the Carter Regan recession not happened who knows, maybe it would have worked. But every single one that followed that path saw their farms fail. Kids who graduated high school and went on to farm? Heck most of them failed too! Only know 3 that survived and all three of the dad kept control of the operation. The ones that failed at farming? they moved on to professional jobs and are doing fine. That degree saved their butts!
