Check the wire between the coil and the distributor. Also, the connections. You can use an ohmmeter or just a plain circuit tester light. I saw this problem on a pickup truck once and it turned out to be corrosion on the connection at the distributor. The small wire between the coil and distributor could have a break in it. If you have a test light do this: Turn the ignition switch on. Ground the test light and touch a probe to the side of the coil which is not connected to the distributor. If you have current here, good. Then touch the probe to the side of the coil which is connected to the distributor. You should have current here. If not, there is a problem with the coil or the connector. If you have current here, then touch the probe to the connector on the distributor. You should have current here. If you don't, either the wire is bad or the connector is dirty and needs cleaning. Once you have current here, remove the distributor cap and touch the probe to the connector that the points fasten to. You should have current here too. If you do, try popping the points open with a screwdriver. You should be able to see a spark when they open. If not, you probably either have dirty points or a bad condensor. One other possibility would be a badly grounded distributor. Some folks run a ground wire from the distributor body to the tractor frame. This has been known to help.
