Jon, Hi I work for a GM dealer. Your son's problems. We do see some problems with the tie rods. Not a lot. The question would be have then been greased properly. Some forget to grease them on a oil change. Some over grease them damaging the boots. Water gets in and damages them. Hubs bearings we do not see a lot. If you replace them make sure you get the best you can buy. We find the less expensive ones only last about 6 mouths. The oil usage. Yes we do have problems. They us low tension rings. 6.0L we don't do a lot. The fix is to replace the rings. You can try cleaning. Seefom or trans fluid in the oil for about 500 miles. Then change oil. The oil rings get stuck and fill with gunk. If you want you could e-mail me the last 8 of the vin. and I could get a copy of the warranty hist. for you if want. David
