OK, thanks to the nice folks in this forum I figured out that my voltage regulator was bad on my 1964 Ford 4000. I put voltage from the battery to the field terminal and the generator went right to charging. So, I pulled my spare regulator off the shelf and installed it. This regulator was bought from Dennis Carpenter last year as a spare. I always keep a spare because the voltage regulator goes bad nearly every year. I bought the one from Dennis Carpenter thinking it might be a little better quality, but no, it is allowing over 17 volts, so I think it is somehiw bad too. In case you are asking yourself "Why doesn't this guy just put on a Delco one wire alternator?" the answer is "I don't want a Delco one wire alternator on my tractor, I want a generator on my tractor". Anyway, does John Deere or anyone else make a high quality voltage regulator that will last? I cannot believe that Mr. Farmer of 1964 would put up with his voltage regulator going bad every year. I managed to find a NOS FOMOCO regulator on Ebay, and it lasted exactly one year. It looks like super high quality, much better than the Mexico units from the parts store. I would like to get the FOMOCO unit fixed if possible. I cannot see anything wrong with it. It just won't work. I enjoy working on my old tractor, but I'm getting sick of fixing the same thing over and over. My battery is new and the wiring harness was installed new from CNH about 10 years ago. It looks brand new. Thanks for any help.
