Not sure about the real stuff that exterminators use, but what is for sale to the public is relatively safe around pets, according to vets.
It is a vitamin K depleter, which causes internal bleeding. Due to the size difference between a rodent and a dog, a one time dose is not likely to cause problems. Still a good idea to make them throw it up and get to a vet ASAP though.
The best way to use it is put it where pets can't get it, and only put a small amount at each location, just in case they do get to it.
Dogs do love the taste of it though! I had some in a locked closet in the garage several years ago. Went in there for just a second, both dogs went charging in, straight for it! Gulped it down like they were starving! Best I recall it was "Just One Bite" brand, the green pellets.
I called the vet, forced peroxide down them, took them in for a vitamin K shot. They showed no ill effects.
