I play some with my Grand Kids. I taught my kids but none of them liked it. My Grand daughters love it. The one that started college this fall is a chess nut. LOL There will be some upper classmen with hurt feeling when they play against her in a game. She usually beats me in under 20 moves.
A little family history here. My Great Great Grand Father came here from Germany. His cloths in a sack, a hand carved wooden chess set/box, and about $50 worth of gold coins, was all he arrived with. His Father gave him his most cherished possession, the chess set, as they both knew they would never see each other again. He set foot in America in July of 1830 and moved to Iowa in 1838 in search of land to buy. He died with a farm and eight kids. His oldest son, my Great Grand Father, received the chess set. He wanted the set to go to the child in the next generation with the most interest in chess not just the oldest. He taught me to play before I know what the game actually was. Like I said none of my kids cared for the game. I asked them all if they would be alright with the one Grand Daughter getting the chess set. They agreed she had the most interest of all the kids or grand kids. When she turned 16 I gave her the set. We researched the set the best we could. We have contacts with the family still back in Germany now. They had some old dairies that talk about kids playing chess for entertainment in the evenings. One talks about a set made by the Father so the kids would no damage his "good" set. The relatives in Germany have the set they feel is the "Good" set. We are pretty sure that the set we have is the "homemade" set. This dairy was written in 1795. The set is crudely made. It is not fancy but it is priceless in my eyes. My Grand Daughter feels the same way. She does not keep it at school but has it in a fire resistant locker at home. So some old family history.
