They likely ran it in a higher gear thus sucking down more fuel. Learned that lesson years ago on a JD 70 gas with a double spring tooth harrow. I forget which gear I was told to run in but in that gear you could go all day on a tank. In the farthest away field I put it up in the next faster gear. Seemed to pull it fine and not lug. Well I ended up walking back to get gas !
