Diesel flashes @ 496 degrees, gasoline @ 536 degrees, pretty close, do not know where that puts the compression point difference. The DI gasoline engines are right on the verge of being self igniting, but there is no possibility to pre-ignite because there is no fuel in the incoming air. Detonation is much less of an issue because atomization is better and they burn leaner. I really doubt there is much of a price difference on the fuel delivery, but there are no particulates to clean up after.
