I've never noticed a thicker walled connector like those, it does look odd (maybe needs a new pigtail for their part). They should send a different (corect) part from a different supplier, maybe the dealer. I don't think the solenoid pack is the issue though. If the TCC solenoid failed it would be stuck on for the TCC to stay applied which is rare, and even more so when is starts working after warming up. Low fluid level, loss of line pressure, along with a few other internal things like valve body, pump/converter clutch control valve, pump, seal/rings etc. Hydraulic pressure releases the clutch on this one, loss of pressure results in locked clutch.
Did the filter fall off when you dropped the pan? Is this a 4wd, maybe with a 2wd filter installed? Filter seal look good?
