What email program do you use? Gmail has very good spam filters.
I use one gmail account for personal email and never give it to websites, only friends and family.
I have a second gmail account I use for businesses I need to communicate with, like the bank, insurance, credit cards, etc.
Then I have a yahoo account that I use for places I don't trust like websites that insist on having an email address for "verification", which is where most spam originates. I only time look at yahoo is when I need a specific email.
Another good option is to pay a little for the email service instead of letting them finance it through advertising. This place is less than a dollar a week; how much is your time worth?
