This area is all fjords. Seawater, yes, but long fingers of ocean reaching inland. Some places the fjords are so big it looks like open sea.
OK I have a question ? why do people live there and what is the way to make a living there -- what do You dig with a backhoe there ? ice ?

Early on they settled Iceland and fished and raised sheep. That still goes on, along with horse-breeding. Only heavy industry as someone pointed out is Aluminum manufacturing. The areas that can tap into the geothermal energy have very low-cost heat and electricity. There is enough soil to get good hay for the sheep and livestock. Start digging and you run into rocks very quickly.

Your dad saw a very primitive version of Iceland. I didn’t live during that time, but it was very undeveloped and much of the modern infrastructure was introduced thanks to our Navy being stationed there.
