I like most animals and do not want to see any mistreated but I do not understand the animal rescue people. First the rescuer is usually a young female who just loves animals, especially horses. To save these wonderful creatures from becoming dog food they get a horse trailer, usually a borrowed or free one, and go about the county side looking for horses to rescue. To that part they are mostly successful as many horses were acquired for some teen age daughter or son who has moved on and no longer has any interest in the animal. Before long the rescue person has a corral full of animals and at that point they discover that hay and other feed is costly.
They now begin to look for others to help with the cost of the great rescue and start contacting their neighbors and local farmers for donations of cash or feed. When they come to see me I do give them a few round bales of hay but my generosity is waning.
Many of these rescue operations wind up as follows,. The rescuer's neighbors notice that the animals look sick and malnourished and they call the SPCA which sends a Vet to check the animals and many of those old horses are old and in pretty bad shape. Then the law is called and a legal process is started that often leads to conviction and a fine. This could have been avoided if the people advising the would be rescuer that animal care is very expensive and before attempting any animal rescue one should be sure that you have the space, the money and the time to provide for animals. Just saying.
