I was having a problem on cold day's with my starter grinding on the first attempt only, each day. I assumed the starter was turning before the gear was fully forward probably due to a sticky Solenoid so without taking the starter off I took the solenoid screws out and seperated it enough to spray some wd40 into the drive end. It still ground on first try so I used my salamander heater directly on the starter for about 5 min. and it started every time with no grinding. Yesterday I had some time so I pulled the starter and took the solenoid completely apart and cleaned it good wiped the bore out and used scotch brite on the plunger put it back together and it started fine and again this morning. It was only in the 30's this morning so Hopefully it will work in cold weather. I know wd 40 aint the best should I use something different as a lube that won't thickenup to much in cold weather? I am open for suggestions.
