If it was a across the board tariff one would think scrap prices would go up. But a lot of our scrap gets made into bars; shipped over seas; made into steel pieces; and shipped back. Would this steel still have a tariff. I would think so.
The problem is we do have enough steel plants that still make usable steel pieces. No matter how big the tariff is we still need to import steel. So what is really going on????
I was thinking it was a shot over the bow of nafta to get what we wanted. Then I notice they have exempted Canada and Mexico (where we get most of our steel) from the tariff. I am still thinking this is a cat and mouse game to get what we want in other areas. You help us here and we put you on the exempt list.
So while scrap may go up short term while this plays out I do not see any long term effect on the price of scrap.
