Yesterday I had to go into our Parish courthouse. As I entered I was met by an armed sheriff's deputy who gruffly instructed me to take everything from my pockets and take off my belt, and to put them into a plastic bin. I then was told to walk through the detector portal, which apparently beeped. I was then ordered to raise my arms, and another deputy wanded me with the hand-held detector. This disclosed that I had forgotten some metal-framed reading glasses in my shirt pocket.
As I was picking up my stuff and putting my belt back on I opined as to how it would be nice if our school children were as well-protected as our elected officials. The deputy did not take that well--apparently he had heard that before.
There were six deputies guarding two entrances to the courthouse. All were "senior", so it's reasonable to guess that they all are in the upper ranges of the departmental pay scale.
Our schools could be better protected by one simple act: take down those stupid "No Guns Here!" signs and replacing them with ones stating "Armed Security Personnel and Teachers on duty at this school".
