Another thing people don't look at is image. For decades now they have found that the average new car buyer, about 70% of em, buy based now on mileage or reliability but rather on style! A person driving a new 12K car is perceived by most people as someone who is driving the most expensive new car they can afford. They don't think "that guys being carful with his money". But back when the cheapest new car and bare bones 2X4 small pickup were about the same price people thought the person in the cheap truck had need of a truck and the person in the car couldn't afford anything better.
As far as wagons? Ford and Chevy were still offering wagons when Chrysler came up with the minivan. I don't know why the minivan killed the wagon but it did. I myself would rather have an SUV. That has to do with knee and back issues plus being 6'5" tall.
