Flails don't really do much damage to alfalfa when adjusted properly, but will take a touch longer to dry than rolls. Will work about the same in grass. Flails may even be a touch better in grass. I don't have a lot of experience with newer ones, but there's a noticeable hp draw difference in the older ones. My flail deere 920 will make my healthy deere 4320 work in heavy first cutting. My buddy has the same mower with rolls and drags it all over with a 4020 that seems to labor less.
