I finally had time to do a thorough investigation. One thing that threw me a bit was the ignition bypass wire (pink) comes off the starter relay, not the key switch as the diagrams show. While cranking I had 9 volts at the relay while cranking. I cleaned terminals and connections and still 9 volts. Then I gave the battery cable a tug at the battery terminal and I could pull it in and out of the crimp a bit. Ha! I made up a new cable with a heavier than factory cable that I had in the store room with new ends TIGHTLY crimped, threw it on and now I have 10.15 volts at the relay while cranking. and the starter has a little more life. The starter was not draggy to begin with but it livelier now. Another check I made was a voltage check in the ignition bypass wire where it plugs into the resistor. This was before I replaced the battery cable. Twice it had no voltage but then on a third try it did have 9V. My theory is 9V wasn't enough to tightly clamp the contacts in the relay. Time will tell on that one. So time will tell the truth. I suspect the relay yet but it's so easy to replace I'll leave it for awhile.
