The Hobbit was simply not as good of a book as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That said, there was enough material in it to make a decent movie. There was NOT enough material to make THREE movies, though. The Hobbit movie trilogy would have been much better if they had kept it to a single movie, but of course the producers couldn't resist the temptation of cashing in on an extra two movies.
