I've been swarmed buy them, and yes they will chase you a 1/4 mile. Lucky for me it was about 45 degrees in the winter time, and I was wearing my insulated coveralls. I had stingers from them on the back of my eneck, ears, and scalp. They are attracted to black (dark colors) having black hair didn't help me any. I got to a water faucet about 3/4 of a mile away and stuck my head under the faucet with 40 something degree water coming out it. I was combing them out of my hair with my fingers while the water was running over my head/hair. I couldn't believe how many of them I combed out of my hair.
