Can you just get a nice canvas tarp or cut one out of an old semi trailer tarp or build some kind of treated plywood box or wood box with some pole barn metal. If you paint it you will never be able to see the level without a sight tube and my eyes aren’t near that good. It’s all about what works best for you but no way I would paint it if it were mine
