I have some iron/steel knuckles given to me by an uncle, who as a young boy found them by an old house out in the country near where I grew up. Since my uncle was born in 1908, it's safe to say these knucks are at least 100 years old. They appear to be too small for the average man of today: they won't go past my knuckles, but then, I'm not sure they're supposed to. Maybe they were supposed to be used on the from of the hand rather than the back.
I also suspect that because the palm 'pad' is so narrow, the 'hitter' might regret a hard, well-placed punch almost as much as the 'hittee'.
