I think you just need to be more careful about keeping your containers and spouts clean. That's the good thing about plastic ones, when they're almost empty you can look inside and see if there is any dirt. I use a funnel with a fine screen as much as possible but on our JD zero turn the tank is small and no gauge, but if I stick the spout on our containers down in the neck it will fill and shut of automatically when full, works great. Most lawn mowers have a transparent filter between the tank and fuel pump that is inexpensive and easy to change.
