The wire is bigger because it is designed to carry more amperage. Once the power leaves the switch, it is divided among several other circuits, so they don't need to be as large.
How hot was it getting?
It is normal for a wire carrying a sizable load to get warm. But if it was getting hot, as in uncomfortable to touch, or discoloring the insulation, something is wrong.
If it is only getting hot near the connection to the switch, could be a loose or corroded connection, or could be a poor contact inside the ignition switch itself.
Check the switch terminals for evidence of overheating, looseness, corrosion or rust. If any present, replace the switch.
Look at the terminal connection on the wire. If damaged it will need to be cut off and replaced.
If there truly is a connection problem at the switch, replacing one without the other will not result in a permanent repair.
