He is correct to always check oil pressure on start up. The vane pump that has a lot of wear will sometimes loose its prime. Easy to prime! Just remove the filter and fill the stand pipe with motor oil. I always start the engine and watch oil come back out the stand pipe with a hose on it, shut the tractor off, put the filter back on, restart the tractor to check the gage for pressure. I sometimes have one set for a year or two without starting them. Most time the pressure comes up but not always.
