AFAIK, Polaris does not keep a database like most auto manufacturers to be able to VIN cut keys. So to duplicate a key you either need the old one or have a locksmith do it. I have taken the cylinder/switch assy to a locksmith to have a key cut before.
Did your friends key match the same cut that was in the recovered Polaris? It's possible several different cuts can operate the same cylinder. It wouldn't surprise me if there are only about a dozen different cuts for all of them, maybe less.
