Included with David's post, MAKE CERTAIN you know what type of brake controller your truck needs! I cannot emphasize that enough!!
One kind is Impulse. With that, even if you step on the truck brake light and steady, the trailer brake starts braking at the set pressure and continues to increase -- or at least that's how it reacted on our truck, which WASN'T supposed to have Impulse-type. Another name for the Impulse type controller is Time-Delayed Brake Controller.
The other type is a Proportional Brake Controller. With them, the trailer brakes work in proportion with the truck brakes. We have the Tekonsha P3, item # 90915. I cannot speak highly enough on the Tekonsha products.
