A duty? Pretty strong statement. I'm guessing that if all the old iron in the world were to be diminished by half the minute I finished writing this sentence, there would still be plenty to go around. Working on and restoring old machines has its appeal, with people approaching it with varying degrees of passion. I tend to be skewed more towards the "Well, it runs and mostly stays together" end of the spectrum. I do agree that there is some value that goes beyond the wrenching and tinkering aspect--like bringing people and community together. Definitely an intangible result that we can be thankful to old rust for.
