The big truck debate. I don't know what kind of area you live in but here are some pros and cons from mine. A straight truck in my area is mainly to haul grain from field to local elevator. The closest terminal is to far to make the trip in anything less than a semi. Most people here still use straight trucks. We have alot of hill ground around here so we park our trucks on road sides alot of times along edge of field. Works pretty good to have 2 trucks and one truck driver. With multiple trucks you can get by with smaller ones, have empty one to dump in all the time, and if you are getting behind on hauling you just find another driver. Driver gets back to field with empty truck he gets out and gets in full truck and takes off. Works really good except you got upkeep on multiple trucks and have to have multiple drivers sometimes. The older smaller trucks in my area can be bought reasonable. The newer bigger straight trucks are the ones bringing the money. Now for the semi. When you get into that in my area you can haul enough grain to haul to the terminal. That is considerably more mile's and takes longer. The truck is away from field for bigger time span. By the time the truck is back the grain cart is full, and the combine is full and shut down, and the combine has to cut some more when it is empty to fill the truck. It works smoother but there is lag time all the way around with just one semi. Two semi's would really be alot smoother in my area since we are so far from terminal. So for us the getting one semi puts us back to the one truck delima. We get more money out of the grain if we haul to the terminal so the longer haul has to be considered if possible. The semi opens that door. A door to a different perspective than the way its done with smaller trucks.
